The 3 stages of giving Deference, arrogance and inquiry

The 3 stages of giving Deference, arrogance and inquiryThe 3 stages of giving Deference, arrogance and inquiryIf you had US $1 million to give to charities aiming to eradicate poverty, how would you do it?Would you support a soup kitchen? A financial literacy program? Educational scholarships? Organizations pressing for policy changes?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreI worked for nonprofits for many years before realizing the way I approached solving social problems said more about me than it did about the problem I wanted to solve. If I really wanted to make a difference, I had to think about how I was thinking about the problem. And, if I wanted to make a difference at a broader level, I had to help donors and nonprofit leaders think about how they think.dem gemeinwohl verpflichtet fundraisers consider many demographic characteristics to explain and predict charitable giving, s uch as age, gender, income, and marital and parental status. As far as I could tell, no scholars had considered how people think as a category worth considering. My quest led me to obtain my Ph.D. and learn to analyze how an individuals thinking changes over time. Along the way, I found that how people construct their ideas influences their philanthropic choices, and that how donors think is as important as what they think. How donors thinkHuman beings develop increasingly complex ways of making sense of the world over the course of a lifetime. To a large extent, this is intuitive you probably expect a 20-year-old to think about many things differently than a 50-year-old. How people think, however, is largely unconscious. People are rarely aware of how they are thinking in the moment.Yet how individuals think influences how they vokalist the world, how they feel and how they behave. And, as I explain in a recent article in Nonprofit Management Leadership, how donors think also influ ences how they choose to give.Through a series of two in-depth interviews, I interviewed 11 philanthropists about where and how they give, and I assessed the complexity with which they approached their giving. This pilot study amassed preliminary evidence linking how people think to their ideas about charitable giving.Early stagesOne of the people I interviewed is a woman Ill call Paula. Shes an executive who currently manages a sizable foundation. Prior to this, she owned her own business. She has about seven years of experience in philanthropy and she spends a lot of time working with nonprofits. Paula did two things throughout her interviews She hesitated when asked to speak her mind and she frequently deferred to other peoples opinions. Despite her decades of professional experience, she still leaned on the ideas of others to make sense of the world.Developmental theorists scholars of how people grow and change over time like Robert Kegan and William Torbert would describe thi s as an early stage of development, by which they mean being unable to separate your own ideas from what others think. Therefore, Paula leans on others ideas, experience and feelings to decide what to do.Middle stagesJoseph is a businessman with decades of experience donating to nonprofits, working on nonprofit boards and serving as a nonprofit executive director. He feels confident that hes learned a thing or two about how nonprofits should be managed. When I asked what he wanted other philanthropists to know, he said fruchtwein nonprofits should probably close down. While they are passion-rich, theyre strategy-poor, he said. They are sopping up resources dollars and board members for organizations that will never become sustainable or scaled. On the surface, his quote may seem like the counsel of a confident person who has been there, done that. What strikes me, however, is that Joseph is doing something Paula is not expressing his own opinion, based on his experience and expertis e.Developmental theorists would describe this as a middle stage of development, in which people draw from a variety of experiences, knowledge and perspectives to come up with their own original ideas. You might notice one other thing Joseph doesnt question his own opinion. He argues that the only reason to run a nonprofit is to make a big impact on the problems addressed by its mission. He does not wonder if there might be other valid reasons, such as developing community-based relationships, addressing local needs or providing services to populations not served by larger programs. The ability to question your own assumptions marks the transition from middle to later stages of development.Later stagesPhyllis is another successful executive and a longtime philanthropist. She once took part in a nonprofit evaluation conference just for the sake of learning. There, she attended a session on a new way for donors to evaluate the causes they support. She noticed audience members hanging th eir heads, perhaps lamenting that their old ways of doing evaluation were insufficient and they needed to learn yet another new technique to do it right. Phyllis had a different perspective We have to find new ways of talking about impact and evaluating impact, and none of the evaluation methods is going to be the answer. She proceeded to consider that philanthropists and foundations needed to change how they were thinking about evaluation the answer wasnt a new technique, but an evaluation of why evaluation was done in the first place.Thinking about the purpose of evaluation, she reasoned, would free leaders and donors from overly rigid approaches. Here, Phyllis is demonstrating a subtle but important shift from focusing on what to think to focusing on how to think, and specifically to questioning the assumptions behind how and why nonprofits evaluate their programs. In thinking about how to think about evaluation, Phyllis opens up new possibilities for these groups and their donors .Experts would describe this as a movement toward a later stage of development, in which people question and deconstruct the assumptions behind their ideas. It is very rare and most people dont get to the point where they do this regularly or without effort, according to developmental theorists. How donors giveThe dollars Phyllis gives away are no better or more important than Paulas or Josephs. However, if any of them want to solve the complex problems facing humanity today, I believe that they must each think about how they think about these problems. For example, I observed that donors in earlier stages of development spoke often of what could be described as reactive giving donations that address what feels like urgent, immediate needs, like feeding the homeless right away.Donors in middle stages of development preferred to make strategic gifts that resulted in outcomes they considered to be important, such as increasing the number of low-income students who go to college.Donors in later stages of development talked about long-term impact. Their discussions interwove the short- and medium-term activities into a long-term, often generational perspective. They often funded educational opportunities that improved staffs ability to do their job, to build the capacity of the organizations they chose to support. There is no one right way to give. Each of these perspectives adds value. While this was a pilot study, my findings are consistent with what developmental scholars have found How people think the structure of their thoughts informs their thoughts and actions. And this, I believe, is worth thinking about. Especially if philanthropists want to solve complex problems.Jennifer A. The Surprising Experience You Gain When You Take Time Off From Work

The Surprising Experience You Gain When You Take Time Off From WorkThe Surprising Experience You Gain When You Take Time Off From WorkAre you nervous about reentering the workforce after what might feel like a lifetime away? Do you feel like youve lost touch with your former professional self and are reentering the work world as an entirely empty slate? Do you view your time away as a time capsule of sorts, a period in which you have been completely closed off from any growth that could possibly be relevant and benefit you in a work context? It is understandable if these anxious thoughts are crowding your frontal lobe as you entertain the notion or actively begin the process of reentering the workforce. But, I have some good news for you These are just your thoughts. Theyre not your reality. You have not been in a time warp since you left the formal work world. You did not stop evolving in ways that will benefit you as a professional. On the contrary, you have more to offer than ever b efore. Regardless of why you left and what you have been doing since that time, there is no question that you have grown and developed new perspectives, attitudes, behaviors, and life skills that will make you an even stronger professional. You just need to allow yourself some time and anxiety-free head space, and to be willing to turn to others (family, friends, an executive coach) to help you gain clarity on what you have learned and how you have grown during your time away. Then, its a matter of figuring out how these new (or further honed) skills can best be applied in a work context- and the best ways to share and promote them.To help you get started, below is just a handful of the many ways in which I (your new and hopefully not too presumptuous writer friend) expect that you have evolved since you left your last job. All are essential traits of a high performing professional.1. You are More of a Risk Taker and Have Greater Experience Facing AmbiguityWhether it was a long-plann ed change or a quick decision, leaving your job was a departure from a way of life to which you were accustomed. Even if you spent innumerable hours in the planning phase, you ultimately took action, one that included a leap of faith and a high level of ambiguity associated with the change.2. You Have Strengthened Your Communication Skills, Particularly When it Comes to Sharing Sensitive InformationWhether your leave was compelled by something wonderful or not so wonderful, it is likely you felt a mix of emotions and anxiety about what to say when sharing your decision and plans with people. The cold hard truth is that there are people who just dont understand, and in turn think poorly of, people who are willing to put anything in their lives above their professional success in a traditional work environment. Even if you didnt encounter anyone who falls into this category, you still had to figure out your script and find a place of comfort in sharing your reasons and plans with frie nds, extended family, and others.3. You are More of a LearnerTo succeed professionally, it is as essential to be a willing, comfortable learner as it is to be a leader. Whether you left your previous job to stay at home with your children, to care for another loved one, to devote all of your time to a volunteer position, to pursue a non-paying professional passion, or for any other reason, there was a lot of learning involved. You learned new skills and developed a new base of knowledge. You learned more about yourself and how you operate in different contexts and with different types of people. And the list goes on.4. You Are More Adept at Establishing New RelationshipsThe parents and others you became friends with as a result of having more time to attend your childrens school and extracurricular activities. The new professional relationships you established through your volunteer work. The networking and relationship building you had to do to pursue an alternative career passion or to address a personal problem. Any of the relationships you established or strengthened during your time away from the formal work world strengthened your relationship skills and increased your experience interacting with diverse groups of people.5. You Have Strengthened Your Capacity for ResilienceSimply by stepping away from the traditional work world, you figured out how to adjust to a major change in the lifestyle you have maintained for many years, if not decades. This shows resilience. Did you also encounter and have to generate solutions to any emotional, physical, or situational problems while you were away from the traditional work world? Thats resilience. Did you hit any roadblocks in your plan for how youd spend your time that required you to shift course at any point? Thats resilience. Did you experience any personal failures that were completely new to you? This is yet another sign of your increased capacity for resilience. You have every reason to be proud of these- and all the other- ways in which you have grown and become more self-actualized during your time away. You also have every reason to highlight these and any other areas you honed while on leave during your job interviews, and to capitalize on them once you re-enter the work world.Read MoreNeed More Experience to Land a Job? The average charge for trimming without shoeing was reported as $40 in the AFJ survey. With four keg shoes, that price was reported as just over $100. This is the day of the week when people are the most creative

This is the day of the week when people are the most creativeThis is the day of the week when people are the most creativeThe desire to create is innate in all of us, even if no-one appears to be able to satisfyingly do so on command. No matter what field you occupy, youll likely identify with the squirm-worthy process of coaxing an idea out from the privacy of your skull and into an arena laced with savagely underwhelmed colleagues. For whatever reason, the bathroom mirror is the only audience principled enough to awaken the optimally confident silver-tongued version of ourselves, and any outside attempts to replicate our wertzuwachs is invariably poisoned by the tendency to regress to flat-incoherent drivel. A good creative idea is defined by one that is both novel and useful. The journals of the late and prolific Sylvia Plath suggest that those that are fortunate enough to have them with some frequency dont additionally have some privileged insight into where they come from. On th e subject Plath once wrote, If I want to write, this is hardly the way to behave- in horror of it, frozen by it. The ghost of the unborn novel is a Medusa-head. Witty or simply observant character notes come to me. But I have no idea how to begin.According to a recent study that used freestyle rap as an interface to explore the neural correlation that bridges brain activity and imagination, when were being creative the part of our brain responsible for decision making is mostly inactive. However, the part of our brain responsible for learn-association and emotional responses remains extremely active- in other words we drive the best when were not really at the wheel. There is a studied science behind the creative process-unfortunately that doesnt make the execution any less frustrating.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraDestructive paralysis and ruinous broodingThe creative proces s supplies a unique anxiety outside of the art world, wherein the sting of rejection is taxed indiscriminately. To be clear, neither scenario is ideal from where I sit, but as a New Yorker that has been burdened with a friend group comprised exclusively of aspiring actors, aspiring painters, aspiring comedians, aspiring writers, and aspiring-aspiring musicians, Id wager about 50% of these lack self-awareness, but I can much more confidently say that 0% lack thick skin. Its weird to consider the importance ofimagination in a corporate context, but Id argue that perfecting the skill is integral to some degree on every level of the chain. Run through all of the most successful non-artists you can think of, everyone from Steve Jobs to Ray Kroc to Marie Kondo, and youll find that they all possess(ed) a certain ingenuity that set them apart from their competitors. In some cases, this spark outweighed the actual business acumen.A recent survey of 4,000 working professionals between the age s of 25 and 50 commissioned by print and design powerhouse MOO and conducted by Atomik Research, better unpacks the creative woes erupting across American and English companies every year.As a design-led company, we understand the importance of being creative and how fulfilling it is to see your ideas come to life, saysBrendan Stephens, MOOs weltweit Creative Director.People are more creative than they think they are. With this research, we wanted to pinpoint the potential stumbling blocks and allow people to understand and unlock their full creative potential.Nearly 2,000 respondents surveyed regret not being more creative, with an additional 30% admitting to creating something original only a few times or less a year. The biggest impediments to the process appeared to be distractions (36%), time constraints (46%), and the job itself (66%). Two-thirds of the respondents said that they feel much more creative on Fridays and Saturdays, with 32% of the 4,000 queried saying that they f eel more creative at night time.Creativity is like a muscle you need to keep exercising explains Stephens. Most of us get into a routine where every day looks generally the same, often at the expense of creative thinking. Making the effort to be creative both at work and in our personal lives helps us flex that muscle more easily.Passion projects are often derided as the idle masturbatory calling card of the Millennials, which isnt completely unfair, but I dont think making a good song should be the only objective in mind when trying your flosse at writing one. Finishing a thing is not only incredibly rewarding it also teaches you how to properly measure expectations, manage time effectively, take pleasure in your work, and push yourself beyond your comfort zone conditioning your mind to be imaginative on your own terms. The authors behind the report explain, If you wait until a stroke of brilliance strikes, your busy life will often get in the way. Set a goal for how many original creations you plan to make in a given month and implement the following tips to achieve that goal. How to break the blockAfter establishing a general creative malaise happening in American and UK offices, the survey went on to ask how those that figured out a way to constantly combat it-did so the results were surprisingly varied.A sizeable portion of those surveyed (53%) said that they felt more creative when they made a point to surround themselves with work that inspired them, whether in the form of listening to great music (44%) or observing the imaginative efforts of their colleagues (39%.) When you become frustrated with your creative endeavors, sometimes taking a break to explore how others did something can help you brainstorm a new approach, the authors add. Some surveyees opted for a more traditional approach to swerving past writers block, an approach thats come to be referred to as shower thoughts. Thirty-one percent of respondents felt that their very best ideas came to them while they showered.Alice Flaherty, who might be the most famous voice funding research behind the science of creativity, posits that the shower-enterprise correlation owes its popularity to dopamine and the limbic system. Any activity that surges dopamine levels, warm showers, listening to music, and even walking will provide more avenues for imagination. Physical activities that dont require your mental attention, like going for a walk, can give your mind the freedom to wander. As your mind explores possibilities away from the workspace, youll discover new ideas and be refreshed to act on them when youre back in the office, the authors conclude. Its an impossibly vulnerable thing to watch your ideas bomb, both privately and amongst peers. However, its important to remember that youve got to go through like 80 bad ideas before you get to a good one. Han Solo welches supposed to be a giant-green-cyborgman, Van Gogh was supposed to be a minister andDostoevsky was supposed to be debrained in St. Petersburg. The only thing standing between you and your next good idea is time and some awkward reflections.

How to Demonstrate Leadership On the Web

How to Demonstrate Leadership On the WebHow to Demonstrate Leadership On the WebHiring managers are always on the hunt for candidates who show leadership potential. But this leads to a difficult challenge for most job candidates how do you practice and grow your leadership skills if you cant get a leadership job without leadership experience? The traditional approach to building your reputation for leadership around the office departures with taking initiative, such as starting book clubs and volunteering for different office-wide projects. But the growth of online communities has also opened up a world of leadership opportunities on the Internet. If youre looking for creative ways to establish your qualifications as a leader, see if one of these four ideas would be a good fit for what you want to do Start a blogA career as a professional bloggermight bedrngnis be the right fit for you, but thats no reason to keep yourself from writing your thoughts out and sharing them online with a simple, free website from WordPressor Blogger. Use your blog to share your ideas about developments in your industry, keep track of the skills youre learning, or record your progress on projects or educational opportunities youre taking. As you write, you can also learn more about which topics resonate with your personal network and your readers to truly show leadership. Not only does starting a blog show initiative, but the act of reflecting on your career and sharing what youve learned also positions you as someone who is thoughtful and helpful two important characteristics of a strong leader. Start a MeetupDepending on where you live and your industry, an in-person Meetup group might be a good way to bring together like-minded people and lead discussions, events or collaborations. If you want to invest in your idea you can use the website Meetup, If not, you can use a free networking website such as Facebookor Craigslistto share your idea.(Of course, we know youll use discretion when planning events in which you meet people from the Internet in real life such as meeting in a public place and not disclosing personal information.)How does this relate to your leadership skills? The ability to recruit people to be a part of your idea and to follow through with the events and meetings you plan are great indications of your knack for motivating people and developing strong relationships. Start a YouTube Channel or LinkedIn GroupSpeaking of free social media tools, YouTube and LinkedIn Groups are great opportunities to define your idea, recruit followers and start conversations. If youre particularly charismatic, you might enjoy recording blog post-type thoughts on YouTube, sharing your experiences and advice for anyone who might visit the site. If youre a little camera shy you can start the same conversation using LinkedIn Groups. LinkedIn Publishingand Twitterare also opportunities for putting your ideas into the world and getting feedback. No matter which kind of social media you use, youre being proactive about connecting people and ideas, and youre taking a stand for how you see the world and your industry. Get involved within your industryHopefully youre catching on to an important theme here being a leader means taking initiative and improving your communication skills. Any website, platform or service you use to practice these skills can be leveraged to develop leadership if you take the time to learn how to engage with others and build an audience. As there are millions of websites in the world, its up to you to be aware of the websites within your industry that will suit your talents and use them to build your skills. For example, a high-ranking Reddit rank might not help you unless youre applying for a job at Reddit, but plenty of other industries have niche websites where you can show off your leadership ability online.Have you used the Internet to start an industry-related group or source of information? Self-reflection time Why you should write an intimidation list

Self-reflection time Why you should write an intimidation list Self-reflection time Why you should write an intimidation list Actually giving my all to something. Sandwiches stacked so thick with veggies I don’t know how to take a bite. Being vulnerable. Money talk. People who can strut better in stilettos than I can in sneakers.   These are a few of the items on my intimidation list. Others include calling the doctor’s office to schedule an appointment and telling any service person that they made my order incorrectly. When was the last time you sat down and asked yourself, “What intimidates me?” Beyond that, when was the last time you sat down to do some self-reflection? Ew, I know. I know. But hear me out. It’s super important to reflect on yourself, your ambitions, your fears, your experiences - all of it. If you don’t understand why you are where you are, who you are - how are you supposed to get where you’re trying to go? Have you ever been stressed, and you can’t really pinpoint why - until you pay your phone bill and simultaneously release your clenched jaw - realizing that was it the whole time?In making time for our work, our friends, our pets, our families, our side hustles - we forget to make time for us. We’ve taught ourselves that it’s more important - a quick fix - to deal with the what (take ibuprofen because my jaw hurts), without giving any thought at all to the why (why am I clenching my jaw?). Fixing the symptoms in the short run works. It’s easier. But in the long-run, you’re doing yourself a great disservice. That’s where the intimidation list comes in. We’re all intimidated by something. We were inspired by an article on Man Repeller (we love them) - it got us thinking about what we’re intimidated by. And why.The processI recommend a simple two-stepper. Get comfy, put on some Stevie Nicks (or whoever), and grab your pen. (Yes, I know, we have computers. Bear with me - I think this works better on real paper.) Actually, on that note - also chuck your phone and computer far far away from you. No distractions. You’re going to work through two questions. What am I intimidated by? Why am I intimidated by that? Soooo easy, right? Take a few minutes to sit there and write. Give yourself time - they’re not all going to come to you at once. If you really feel gung-ho about this, take a week to stay cognizant to your intimidations as you come across them, noting them when you do. I did, and I was surprised at how often I push away thoughts of “aghhhhh” throughout the week - some things I’ve made habitually intimidating. What intimidates me?I encourage you to try to go a bit deeper than the surface level intimidations that you’ll think of. “Taking risks”, “failing”, “confident people” are all intimidating - I get it. But what else? What specific things, people, experiences, intimidate you? Do you encounter something day in day out that gets you, every time?Do you usually avoid doing something, avoid seeing someone, or talking about a certain topic? Is it because you’re intimidated? When I tried to pick my coworkers’ brains about their intimidations, answers included, â €œcreative ruts”, “making a fool of myself”, “loud men in meetings”, “new coworkers” (which we all were, at some point, meaning that Kit was intimidated by her subordinates), “client silences”, and “good looking people (people with geometric faces).” It doesn’t have to be a big reveal - you probably subconsciously know what belongs on this list.Work through itI read somewhere recently- and now I can’t find it, of course - that people aren’t really afraid of failure. Most of us aren’t petrified by the idea that we won’t succeed at something. We’re actually afraid that it will work. We’re afraid of being great. We’re afraid of reaching our potential. Because what then?Once you’ve figured out what you’re intimidated by, it’s time to take it a step further, and ruminate on the why.I’m intimidated by the idea of actually giving my all to something. I’m scared to reach my full potential. But when I asked myself why, I realized that it’s because if I give my all, and I still am not where I want to be, I’ll feel inadequate. I would rather be able to say, “Yeah, I didn’t succeed, but I didn’t really try my hardest.” It makes risks easier to take, and failure easier to swallow, if I can use the excus e that at least I didn’t give it my all - so it’s not a dead end.I also realized, that on some level, I know exactly what I need to let go of in order to get to where I want to be. I need to let go of this fear of not being enough, even if I completely try my hardest. I’ll work on it.Yeah, but what’s the point? What’s the point of this, you mean? Other than being fun (woo!), this is also a great exercise to help you identify your fears - which is the first step in challenging them. If you spend time just to make a list about what you’re fearful of, what you’re impressed by, great. Great start. If you take a few minutes more to question why those things intimidate you - even better. Maybe you’ll find common themes. Maybe you’ll learn that you’re not actually afraid of what you thought you were. Maybe you’ll find that what you think you’re afraid of, you’re really one step away from conquering. And that’s where self-growth starts. So dig deep this week. Reflect. What intimidates you? This  article  first appeared on  Career Contessa.

Overcoming Anxiety First Leadership Role

Overcoming Anxiety First Leadership Role Overcoming Anxiety First Leadership Role Moving up to your first leadership position brings new challenges and more responsibility. Youll have a lot to learn, says Jeffrey Kahn, a psychiatrist at Weill-Cornell Medical Center, NY. Your new role could include dealing with productivity, budgets, policy, design, implementation, and being in charge of how your team is doing, he continues. You might be a little apprehensive about learning how to do all these things, Kahn acknowledges. But remember, other people think you can do them or they wouldnt have given you this leadership role. Clarify Your Goals To begin to lead most effectively, First clarify your goals, advises Amy Kohut, director of Cornell Universitys Team and Leadership Center. Its essential to find out just why, and what, the people youre leading are involved in. Do your goals and theirs match? If not, thats a good place to spend your early time as a leader. Clarity is always essential in order to lead, she stresses. Some goals are very specific. For example, you might be directing a project with a definite completion date. If your team is building a robot, you want to know, before beginning the work, exactly what you need that robot to do, says Kohut. Will it be aquatic or terrestrial? That impacts how it gets built, and exactly what components will be needed. Youre not looking for wheels if its an underwater robot. Often, your new role is less defined. You might simply have ongoing, more general responsibilities, Kohut points out. Whatever the situation, she recommends starting out with a team visit, to help you learn quickly whether everyones objectives are aligned. People need a clear sense of purpose, of just what youre all doing together. Talk about that with both your team and your supervisors. Making sure that all arrows are pointing in the same direction is very important. Early on, establish your teams overall purpose. Invite the group to formulate the plan with you, says Kohut. Then, you fit in the pieces which members of the team will do each task? You want your strategic thinkers to brainstorm, and then the detail folks can work out the specifics. Once theres a shared vision, the leader is able to observe and help others work to their full potential. Angst: The Origins of Anxiety and Depression by Jeffrey P. Kahn. Seek Feedback Excellent leaders follow an insightful guideline: Know yourself, but seek to understand others, Kohut emphasizes. To build understanding, get some feedback, especially when youre starting out. Ask, what am I doing thats helpful for the team? or Can you suggest a way for me to be more helpful? Asking for input is a great way to build a relationship, she explains. We each have strengths; new leaders, like everyone they work with, are more naturally inclined to do certain things. Valuing the differences, says Kohut, is as important as following your own instinctive style. The strongest teams have a variety of styles. Successful leaders bring out the best in each team member. Dont pretend you can do everything. Rely on other peoples strengths, too, so observe what those are. You can simply ask, Whats your greatest strength for this project? or What do you love to do? The reply might be, I love to analyze details, or Interact with people. Kohut calls this approach, A very positive way to lead. You see where the skills mesh, so that everyone will be working at their full potential. She also recommends knowing your own bottom line. What is not okay for you? It might be something, for instance, as simple as starting meetings on time. People on a team need a baseline, so state your expectations clearly. You might say, Everyones time is important here, and its disrespectful to show up ten minutes late. Often, in engineering, you may need to take charge of a projects different elements, solve technical problems, and integrate not just the science but also the people components of your team, Kahn notes. You can learn some of the skills by observing successful leaders in your own company, or from a coach. Reading management books and biographies of outstanding leaders can help, too. Kohut concurs. Continue to grow and learn. For your own professional development, attend workshops or classes. You can ask your bosses to cover tuition for [relevant] courses. Surprisingly, feeling a little anxious may be very helpful. It can motivate you to learn more about the new aspects of your job, says Kahn, author of Angst: The Origins of Anxiety and Depression (Oxford University Press, 2012). So, Instead of being overwhelmed by anxiety, keep reminding yourself that someone believes youre very competent. That can encourage you to work extra hard and become quite successful as a leader, he adds. Carol Milano is an independent writer. You can learn some of the skills by observing successful leaders in your own company, or from a coach.Jeffrey Kahn, psychiatrist, Weill-Cornell Medical Center, NY

This is what authenticity looks and feels like

This is what authenticity looks and feels like This is what authenticity looks and feels like Every one of us has a story. What’s yours? Better yet?- ?do you  really  know how to share it and tell it in such a way that liberates you, while simultaneously resonating with the community around you? That’s where the good are at. That’s when you know you’re comfortable enough in your own skin to take a big step forward and embrace your true self.I’m not here to teach marketing or personal branding 101. I’m here to ask you to think deeper on who you really are. To think more about your “story” and why it matters. To ask you to dive into it and begin incorporating it into your conversations, business relationships?- ?and that constant inner dialogue you have.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! With yourself. You have a story. It’s real. Whether you think it’s unique or just plain boring, it doesn’t matter. Your story is what will connect you to other peopl e and make a huge difference in building your character, as well as boosting your self-confidence. It provides you the ability to be yourself in this world. You’ll find as you continue moving in the direction of a life of fulfillment, this is really all that matters. You see, the business relationships you carve out will be derived from your authenticity?- ?the qualities that make you,  you. The family?- ?your birth family and those people in your life that, let’s face it, are  family, will be attracted to you for your true self. Not some cheap imitation or knock-off of who you think you need to be. They probably already know their story. But they want you to live it, to embrace it and to tell it for what it is.The person that you choose to invite into your life?- ?for love, romance, forever?- ?will not be worth your time if they’re chasing you for perceived material value. Rather, they’ll be worth a lifetime of commitment if they’re willing to put you before themselves. And if that you that they choose to put before themselves is your true self. The one that lives with joy, fire, zeal and imagination. As St. Catherine of Siena once said, “Be who you are meant to be- and you will set the world on  fire.” When I hear people talk about “Being Yourself” I come back to this main point: In order to you know your true self, you need to know your story. I acknowledge, we’re always writing the story of our life. So focus on the present. But know that it really helps to know your past, in so many ways. Start with where you’ve been. Focus every day on the grind for the present. And let that light the way to your future. Here are some things to think about for your story: Know what lights the fire inside of you (what you love and inspires passion) Know what you don’t like (which is just as important!) Understand what has failed and WHY Recognize what has worked, and WHY Embrace what comes naturally to you Analyze what you struggle with All of these points you toward what your emotions tell you in each situation. Your emotions guide you, and help you to make sense of your life.Once you begin to better understand your emotions, you will gain a greater acceptance of your self. You’ll find yourself listening with greater intent to your intuition- that powerful, eternal voice inside of you that always seems to know what’s right for you.Your intuition is always willing to guide you and be your life’s compass, leading you to grander and bolder frontiers of limitless possibility. Your intuition is letting you know who you really are.The truth is, in life, we usually know the answers. We know what we need to do. We just have to do it.We know who we really are. We have to follow what our intuition and heart are saying. So, who are you?I think you already know. Embrace yourself. You should know what this feels like by now. It’s indescribable. It’s otherworldly. You just need to live it. And from those experiences, you can your story to the world. We’re waiting to hear all about it.Join my newsletter for emotional intelligence and productivity content! How to design your day to be super productive

How to design your day to be super productive How to design your day to be super productive How you design your day can impact your mood, productivity, and general wellbeing. But the most important thing to keep in mind is that these decisions must be  personal.  What’s best for your body’s natural rhythms might differ greatly from mine.As author Gretchen Rubin writes in  one of my favorite books of hers, “To shape our habits successfully, we must know ourselves.” We are all unique, and while I believe that bringing mindful intention to how we structure our workday can be helpful for all of us, how you end up structuring it should be entirely based on what feels best for you.Start the day beforeI like to get started the day before â€" especially on Sunday nights when looking at the week ahead. I sit down with my  LifeTracker Planner  and review my biggest meetings, events, and deliverables for the week ahead.Midweek I do the same, taking special note of any meetings that I have the next day, which I almost always schedule for the afternoon. This allows me to preserv e the mornings for the hardest work I do: creating original content like this blog post and podcast, writing reports or preparing  workshops  for my corporate clients, or preparing for an upcoming  Bossed Up Bootcamp.I’ve found mornings to be the best times for my productivity and creativity, so I do my best to schedule whatever calls and meetings need to happen the next day for the afternoon.Set a #1 priorityEvery day I look at all the items on my TO-DO list in my  planner, and come up with my number-one top priority. What’s the most urgent thing that needs to get done today? Or what’s the biggest, most complex problem I need to solve today? That’s where I begin.I try to capitalize on  the fresh start effect  at the beginning of the day and tackle the biggest challenges I’m facing first, but I’ll admit it: it doesn’t always work. As something of a recovering perfectionist, I have to resist the temptation to procrastinate because I don’t feel 100% ready to start. I t ry to dive in head first to take on the top priority of the day right away. Sometimes that means asking for help from my advisors, peers, or mentors, when I’m feeling unsure of myself or stuck.Delegate firstThis brings me to another strategy I picked up from one of my first managers and have found to be incredibly helpful over the years: make sure you’re not being a bottleneck. At the start of each day, I look at my TO DO list and look for opportunities for delegation. Do I need to get my tax accountant an updated profit loss statement for them to prepare my quarterly tax payments? Must I record a podcast introduction to get it to my Production Assistant Kirby and our editor so they can finalize that episode? Should I hop on the phone quickly with an incoming featured trainer for  Bossed Up Bootcamp  in order to give her the information she needs to get me the materials I need to feature her?Whenever  I  am the bottleneck that’s holding a project up from moving forward, I aim to prioritize those items and give others the tools they need to help me get stuff done. That also means giving my team members whatever they need to get them up and running on their work, too. Delegate first and it’s like you’re multiplying your productivity.Embrace productive procrastinationI’m far from perfect when it comes to being a task-master who’s  always  on top of things. But I’ve learned over the years not to beat myself up when I catch myself procrastinating. Instead, I try to give myself permission to be a productive procrastinator. For instance, when I catch myself mindlessly scrolling through social media, I can recognize that clearly my brain needs a break. Instead of beating myself up about it and trying to force myself back into worker bee mode, I get up and clean my kitchen, do a load of laundry, or call my mom. Maybe I’ll get inspired to make the bed or get dinner going in the slow cooker. I consider these “chores” a form of productive procrastina tion: a way to avoid  real  work  and give my brain a break while still getting things done. Now I recognize that a lot of this is what comes with the privilege of working from home most days (when I’m not on the road for days on end), but this can apply to others, too. Get up from your desk and make that doctor’s appointment you’ve been meaning to. Call your relatives you know you should check in with more anyway. Start planning your upcoming vacation. Whatever it is, productive procrastination is going to leave you feeling more energized and less guilty about avoiding work than the more mindless, passive forms of procrastination.Motivate with evening plansFinally, I’m the kind of person who could easily “accidentally” keep working late into the evening most nights. In fact, when Brad has a big project or deadline he’s working towards, we both go through those phases and regularly eat dinner at 9 pm in our house as a result. But one way I’ve found to curb my endless workday habit is to schedule fun evening plans as much as I can.Earlier this year I wrote about the joy of midweek dinner dates with friends, which I try to make happen as often as possible. Otherwise, I try to get industry happy hours and other weeknight events on my calendar to get my eyes off screens and actually converse with other human beings at the end of the day. When I’ve got something fun on the docket in the evening, it  majorly  boosts my productivity between the hours of 4pm and 6pm than my usual end-of-day slog. This article was originally published on BossedUp.

How to avoid the 7 common mistakes that cause new habits to fail

How to avoid the 7 common mistakes that cause new habits to fail How to avoid the 7 common mistakes that cause new habits to fail At the start of each year, millions of people around the globe- highly motivated to turn over a new leaf- write down their New Year’s resolutions for the year and firmly hold unto the belief that “this year will be different.”But is this year  really  that different?By the third week in March each year, the large number of New Year’s Resolution-ers begin to drop out like flies. It’s not uncommon to notice a significant decline in gym memberships, event attendances, book purchases and savings, around this period.By the end of each year, only 19% of people have stuck to their New Year’s Resolutions- which means there’s an 81% chance that your New Year’s Resolution will fail this year.  1The difference between people who stick to their new habits and those who don’t, is that the former avoid making common mistakes that cause habits to fail. Here are the seven common mistakes that cause new habits to fail with strategies to help you avoid them, and finally stick to your N ew Year’s Resolutions this year.Mistake No. 1: Trying to do too much, too quicklyAt the start of a new year, we experience an intense rush of excitement and motivation to change our lives for the better, and begin to pursue many goals. The problem is often we fail to recognize that this newfound motivation is an artificial high that’ll only last for a few weeks.Once the motivation dies out, we struggle to devote adequate energy and time to all of the goals we’ve set, we lose focus and eventually give up.Solution:  Resist the temptation to take on more goals than you can handle. Count the costs ahead of time and ask yourself the following questions to decide if the goal is worth pursuing:How high a priority is this goal compared to the others? Do I have enough time and energy to devote to this goal on a weekly basis? Can I breakdown the goal into smaller, more sustainable targets? If a goal ranks low in your priority list and there’s little time available to devote towards it, consider eliminating it altogether. As painful and challenging as this may be,  quitting on your goals  and  eliminating the inessential  is a powerful strategy used by high achievers to stay focused on what matters and consistently achieve their goals.Mistake No. 2: Focusing on the goal and not the systemIn the best-selling book  Atomic Habits  (Audiobook), Habits expert, James Clear, challenges the widespread belief that goal-setting is necessary to achieve success.Clear makes a strong argument that goals (results you want to achieve) without strong systems (the processes that lead to the results) leads to failure, and presents a thought-provoking question:“If you completely ignored your goals and focused only on your system, would you still succeed?”In my experience, the difference between the goals I’ve failed to achieve and the ones that have succeeded is the system. For example, last year I set a goal to sponsor the primary school education of at least 10 impoverished chil dren, and I failed to do so because my system was non-existent.Pursuing goals without a good system is like trying to hit a bulls-eye whilst throwing darts, blindfolded. Your odds of success are very slim.Solution:  Breakdown each goal you have into the processes and actions that would lead to your desired results, and focus on improving them. Here are a few examples: If your goal is to lose weight and get in shape, your system is how often and how well you exercise, how often you make healthy choices over unhealthy ones and so on. If your goal is to become a better writer,  your system is how often and how well you practice writing, how well you research ideas to write about and so on. If your goal is to grow your business,  your system is how you well you hire employees, test product ideas and so on. In the words of Greek poet Archilochus, “We don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.”Mistake No. 3: Failure to change environmentEnvironment is arguably the most important invisible force that influences human behavior. What exactly is environment? It’s anything we experience through any one of our five senses. But the most powerful of these is sight. For example, you’re more likely to purchase items at eye level in a supermarket aisle than items near the floor. Because of this, stores strategically position expensive brand names- that’ll drive more profits- within our eyesight and cheaper alternatives hidden away from view. This is particularly true for items at the end of aisles- 45 percent of Coca-Cola sales are generated from end-of-the-aisle racks.  2In a similar fashion, you can  design your environment  to make it much easier to stick to healthy habits and break bad ones. For example, last year I made one tiny change to my envi ronment that helped me to read significantly more books than the year before. The change was extremely simple: I held a book in my hands wherever I traveled to and from. And because of this, during my commutes and travels, I’d read my books instead of wasting valuable time on my mobile phone apps.Bearing in my mind that my goal at the start of the year was to read 20 books, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I’d surpassed my goal and read a total of 25 books. This is the power of environment.Solution:  Brainstorm different ways you can design your environment to make it easier to stick to your new habit. Here are a few examples: If you want to eat healthier, remove unhealthy foods from sight and position healthy foods within eyesight. For example, you could keep a bowl of apples in the middle of your dining table. If you want to exercise more, pack your gym clothes the night before bed and leave them as an obstruction to your bedroom door. On your way to work in the morning, you’ll be more inclined to pick up the gym bag and workout later in the evening. If you want to read more books, keep a book on you at all times and place a selection of interesting books on your bed. You’ll be more inclined to read before you fall asleep. Contrary to popular opinion, it’s the people with the most self-control that use it the least, because their environment makes it easier for them to preserve their willpower for when it’s needed the most.Mistake No. 4: Failure to stay accountableWe tend to gravitate towards the pleasure of setting new goals and avoid the pain of taking action towards them.Left alone to our own devices, we often get stuck in a deep cycle of procrastination where we constantly  start new things and never finish.Accountability is a powerful strategy to ensure that we escape the procrastination trap and face the pain of taking action. For example, two years ago I publicly announced my goal of writing and publishing at least one article per week on MayoOshin.Com.Even though I’d prefer not to write on most days, this public accountability has helped me to stick to the habit of writing each week, because I’d rather avoid the pain of disappointing the members of the  newsletter, than the pleasure of p rocrastinating on writing.Solution:  As a general rule of thumb, the following equation is useful to think about your accountability method:Pain of Inaction  minus  Pleasure of Procrastinating  equals  ActionIn other words, the greater the pain of not taking action than the pleasure of procrastinating, the greater the likelihood you’ll take more action towards your goals. The best accountability method for you will increase the pain of inaction beyond the threshold of pleasure.Examples include: public announcements, paying people as punishment for inaction and signing up for memberships or coaching.Mistake No. 5: Failure to create a feedback systemThe first step to changing any habit is awareness of what we are doing. As the famous psychologist Carl Jung once said, “until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”Despite this, we often make the mistake of creating goals without setting up a feedback system to track and measure our p rogress. Not only does this prevent us from spotting valuable opportunities to make changes that will improve our odds of success, it also holds us back from celebrating or noticing our progress, leading to discouragement, self-doubt and giving up on our goals.Solution:  There are several ways you can measure and keep track of your progress. For example, if you’re a data driven person you can keep an excel spreadsheet with visual graphs of your progress and keep a  workout journal  for workouts.Another useful strategy is to use visual cues including putting coins in a jar and crossing off days on a calendar.Mistake No. 6: Energy mismanagementIt’s hard enough starting a new habit, it’s ten times harder when you don’t have enough energy to take action on it.For example,it’s much harder going to the gym three times a week when you’re constantly tired and exhausted from lack of sleep. The key point here is that more times than not, we fail to stick to new habits because we donâ €™t have enough energy to take action towards them.Solution:  I won’t spend much time talking about the importance of fundamentals for boosting energy- sleep, exercise and healthy eating- as I’m sure you’ve heard about them before. That aside, other powerful strategies for boosting energy include  solitude  and managing your  circadian rhythm.Mistake No. 7: Short-term thinkingIn general, there are only two types of people who set goals: short-term thinkers and long-term thinkers.Short-term thinkers scheme and plan for quick wins, and the instant gratification of short-term results from their goals.Long-term thinkers scheme and plan to make lifestyle changes that will produce rewards from their goals over the long run. They create and improve their systems, and focus on  changing their identity, instead of focusing on their goals. The difference between the two may seem subtle, but the differences in results couldn’t be worlds apart.Short-term thinkers are a lot more likely to j ump ship and give up on their goals in the face of adversity and setbacks, than long-term thinkers. As a result of this, over the long run, long-term thinkers- who may have struggled to make any progress at the start- achieve their goals, whilst short-term thinkers jump from one idea to another without finishing any one of them.Solution:  Building and sticking to new habits isn’t a short-term gig, it’s a long-term one.The real question is: are you in this for the long run? Are you willing to stand by your habit come rain or shine, even possibly for the rest of your life? The choice is yours to make.Mayo Oshin writes at  MayoOshin.Com, where he shares the best practical ideas based on proven science and the habits of highly successful people for stress-free productivity and improved mental performance. Is Your Job Application Error-Free Most Likely No!

Is Your Job Application Error-Free Most Likely No! Is Your Job Application Error-Free Most Likely No! You would consider yourself a fairly conscientious job seeker. You try to pay attention to the finer details of the job applications you send out to potential employers. But try as you might, there’s a fairly good chance that your job application isn’t error-free. Here are some of the most common mistakes found on job applications- and how to  make your job application error-free. The Most Common Mistakes Found on Job Applications: Misspelling Your Own Name It seems absolutely inconceivable, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to misspell your own name. Think about it: you type your name all the time (and oftentimes without thinking) so it makes sense that you’re bound to lose a few letters or switch them up along the way. But misspelling your own name is a sure sign to a potential employer that your job application is sloppy, so make sure that your name is spelled correctly, every time you use it on your resume and cover letter. This tip is an easy way to keep your job application error-free and looking professional. Misspelling the Company’s Name You could have sworn that the company you were sending your job application to was X Company, Inc. Turns out, it was XZ Company, LLC. A hiring manager might take offense to the fact that you didn’t take the time to use the company’s name correctly- and pitch your job application into the trash. So check the company’s website for the official spelling of the company’s complete name. Take the time to keep your job application error-free, it may mean the difference between the employer actually reading it, or it landing in the trash. Incorrectly Addressing the Cover Letter Sometimes, job descriptions don’t give detailed contact information. In cases like that, a customary “To whom it may concern” is sufficient. However, if a contact name is listed in the job description, and you still send your job application addressed to “To whom it may concern,” there’s a good chance that you’ll offend the hiring manager or prospective boss reading it. Pay particular attention to the details on the job listing, including contact info, to ensure that you pay respect to the person reading it by using their name. Bad grammar skills. Of course, you know the various usages of “their,” “there,” and “they’re,” but if you’re filling out a job application quickly, there’s a chance that you might slip and use the wrong word. Thing is, bad grammar skills can cost you the job, because it reflects poorly on your grammar skills and your ability to proofread your job application. Even if you’ve read over your cover letter a bazillion times, take a 15-minute break (particularly if you’re applying for a job that you really, really want) and then sit back down and review your job application for any potential grammatical errors before clicking send. Lying on Your Resume No doubt about it, lying on your resume is very, very bad. The chances of getting caught are fairly high, since it’s easier than ever for a prospective boss to go online and verify your previous employers or other aspects of your job application. And once you’re caught in a lie, there’s no way to get out of it. You’ll look like an untrustworthy job candidate, and a potential boss might not want to call you in for a job interview, much less take the chance of hiring you. So if your skills section is a little bare, try sprucing it up by taking some classes or certification courses while you job search (it can help beat the boredom of applying for positions all day long!). And if you’re trying to hide a resume gap, consider switching up the format to a more functional resume as opposed to a chronological one. Unfortunately, there are many ways that you can goof up on your resume and cover letter. But by taking the time to go over each part of it, you can make your job application error-free- every time. Readers, what have been some of your bigger job application errors? Let us know in the comments below!

How to Reduce the Risk of Employee Theft

How to Reduce the Risk of Employee Theft How to Reduce the Risk of Employee Theft Security and surveillance strategies have improved tremendously in recent years because of advances in technology. Multi-use surveillance equipment and less conspicuous trend-tracking apps are more effective at identifying possible loopholes in the security system. These loopholes provide opportunities for thieves or embezzlers to gain unauthorized access to company coffers and inventory.   Employee Theft Is on the Rise According to data from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 75 percent of employees have admitted stealing from their employers at least once, and 38 percent admit to stealing from employers at least twice. The FBI refers to employee theft as the fastest growing crime in the U.S., costing businesses about seven percent of their expected margins. The problem becomes so dire for some businesses hit with employee theft that about 33 percent are pushed into bankruptcy due to losses from theft or fraud. Reports collated by Statistic Brain indicate that more than 28 percent of business losses ranged from $100,000 to $499,000, and 25 percent of losses exceeded $1 million. These figures are disturbing because they demonstrate that business losses due to employee theft are not trivial. The median value of cash or goods stolen was placed at $75,000. In 2014 alone, more than 1.2 million shoplifters and wayward employees were caught in the act, according to a study conducted by Jack L. Hayes, a loss prevention and inventory shrinkage control consulting firm. More significantly, these numbers were generated from 25 big retailers, suggesting that the problem is more widespread and the losses more substantial if small to medium retailers were included in the mix. According to several studies, losses from employee theft outpaced losses from shoplifting. Employee Theft Methods Employee theft may be difficult to detect because the perpetrator is an insider familiar with the system. Additionally, these employees have access to the keys of the kingdom because of their positions and their reputation as dependable team players. These are a few of the methods commonly used to steal from the company. Accounting and finance personnel can redirect checks received to personal accounts. Since they maintain the ledgers, they can cover-up the theft by altering entries. With access to the corporate checking account, employees can write checks for fictitious payments that are diverted to personal accounts.Theft of cash requires planning since cashiers have to balance their cash box at shift closing. They can skim cash by deliberately undercounting change to customers and keeping the difference. For non-scan businesses, employees can quote a higher price for untagged merchandise and pocket the balance. Theft of merchandise is carried out through surreptitious use of garbage bins, recycling system, or personal bags to sneak out business goods. In retail, the return and refund process yields many chances to steal from the company with or without the help of a third party.Theft of supplies may seem petty, but the amount adds up quickly when employees become more brazen with taking office supplies for personal use.Payroll theft refers to payment for unearned time and reimbursement for non-business expenses. Understanding the Motivations Behind Employee Theft In most companies, employees undergo a stringent screening process, including background checks, employment history, and credit checks. The process is designed to exclude unsuitable individuals from the pool of applicants. It is safe to assume that employees who pass the pre-employment hurdles are qualified, dependable, and trustworthy. In many cases, the perpetrators are long-time trusted employees who change from hardworking, employee-of-the-month types to sneaky thieves who create meticulous plans to redirect funds to their own accounts or help themselves to inventory. What could possibly motivate these individuals to risk their career and livelihood to make a few thousand dollars? Drastic life changes: Loss of a loved one through death, divorce, or separation is a devastating development for anyone. This could reduce the employees income stream and increase expenses. Faced with mounting bills, the employee seizes the opportunity to take small amounts of money. Often, they believe that they can pay it back without getting caught.Living beyond their pay scale: The largest losses are typically due to embezzlers seeking to live beyond their means. They seek to live the good life but are unable to afford the goods and amenities on their own. Stolen funds are used to acquire pricey cars, homes, and luxury goods. The employee may take expensive vacations and engage in activities that cost more than what they can afford. Opportunity: Employees may start out pilfering petty amounts because the opportunity presents itself. Customers may forget to claim their change or bookkeepers may find an opportunity to adjust the books without being noticed. Taking advantage of these opportunities may become habit-forming and soon spiral out of control.Addictions: Individuals dealing with compulsive behavior that costs money are not good candidates for jobs that involve cash handling or accounting. Compulsions can overcome even the best intentions, and employees end up funneling business funds to feed gambling, drug, and other addictions. Greed: Good old-fashioned greed drives trusted employees to exploit  opportunities to take for themselves what has been entrusted for business purposes. Theft can take the form of funds diversion or appropriating equipment and other goods for their own use.Bad apples who passed the screening process: The employment screening process should weed out candidates with criminal records, but sometimes a few will pass the vetting due to inadequate background research or glitches in records processing. Placed in a position of trust, these individuals may be plotting their scheme to steal from the company even at the outset. Revenge: Perceived slights can drive employees to seek retribution by stealing from the company. An individual who is passed over for a promotion or lateral transfer to a preferred location or someone who takes a negative assessment too personally may feel that they are claiming what has been denied to them by stealing from the company. Defensive Strategies to Minimize Employee Theft The best defense is a proactive approach to the problem of employee theft. Security experts suggest that business owners and managers should assume that it is happening or that it will happen when the opportunity arises. This does not mean treating all employees with suspicion because that is the quickest way to sink morale. The strategy calls for a comprehensive systems review to identify the loopholes in administrative and operational procedures.   Strengthen the pre-employment screening process to identify red flags.  Positions that provide access to accounting and financial records should be subject to high-level background checks, covering credit history and all encounters with the criminal justice system. Cash-handling assignments should be given to established employees instead of new hires. Be wary of inconsistencies in the resume or blatant lies because this may be an indication of questionable character.Establish a system of checks and balances especially for employees in sensitive positions with access to cash and other financial accounts. Implement a buddy system that involves at least two employees working together at all times. Procedures that call for voiding sales and issuing customer refunds should require approval by a supervisor or manager. In the bookkeeping and accounting department, ledgers should be maintained by a team of employees instead of entrusting only one person with the books. Under no circumstance s should one person be entrusted with control of all financial records, which should be subject to unannounced audits by a third-party professional. Use an outside accountant to examine key financial records.  Bank statements, checks issued and checks received, and the ledgers for accounts payable and accounts receivable should be verified by a third party. Make sure that payees are verifiable and signatures on your corporate checks are legitimate.  Install a video surveillance system as a deterrent. People are less likely to engage in dishonest behavior if they know that they are on camera. The cameras are there to discourage risky behavior before it happens. Real-time video monitoring may be helpful in high-risk and high-value areas such as stockrooms and the sales floor of luxury goods.   Establish trash removal routines.  Eliminate all chances of using the disposal and recycling system to steal merchandise for personal use or for reselling elsewhere. The process may include disassembling and flattening all boxes and crates, using clear garbage bags only, and ensuring one-way access to the dumpsters for employees.Improve employee morale. Building trust is a two-way street. Get to know the employees, establish rapport, and build relationships because people may be less likely to give in to temptation if they are happy at work and care about their career. Open an employee tip line.  In relation to the previous suggestion, employees who are loyal to the company can help limit losses due to fraud and theft by reporting their suspicions anonymously. Ensure confidentiality of all reports, and investigate each report thoroughly before taking action.   To Prosecute or Not to Prosecute Small to medium-size businesses are disproportionately victimized by embezzlers and fraudsters. Sixty-four percent of small businesses report that they have been victims of employee theft, yet only 16 percent report it based on a study conducted by a doctoral student in criminal justice at the University of Cincinnati. Often, small business owners do no more than fire the employee because pursuing litigation is costly with no assurance that stolen funds will be paid back. Other companies refrain from suing to avoid scrutiny of their confidential records. When it comes to employee theft, prevention is the best defense. Review your systems and procedures to identify vulnerable areas, and make the changes as needed. It may help to work with a neutral party with a fresh perspective to find the red flags. When incidents of fraud and employee theft are found, act quickly, decisively, and firmly. Follow a zero-tolerance policy to protect your company from incurring substantial losses due to employee theft.
