Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is One Highlight of Engineers Week 2014

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is One Highlight of Engineers Week 2014 Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is One Highlight of Engineers Week 2014 Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is One Highlight of Engineers Week 2014 Next week, the 13th Annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day will offer young women across the United States a wealth of activities - including workshops, lab tours, online discussions, and hands-on projects at companies, universities and other locations - that are designed to engage girls and encourage them to consider engineering as an academic and career path. Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is just one of many entertaining and enlightening events that will make up Engineers Week 2014 from Feb. 16-22. Other Engineers Week activities taking place next week include DiscoverE Family Day in Washington, D.C., the final round of the Future City Competition, and the unveiling of the 2014 New Faces of Engineering. The celebration of engineering continues into March with two additional Engineers Week programs: the Global Marathon, a three-day event comprised of interactive webcasts and local satellite events that coincides with International Women's Day, and the DiscoverE Educator Awards, which has a nomination deadline of March 14. Engineers Week is managed by DiscoverE (formerly the National Engineers Week Foundation). This year's co-chairs are IEEE-USA and Dupont. One of the highlights of this year's Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day will be a live #STEMchat on Twitter the evening before Girl Day. #STEMchat is a monthly Twitter conversation that brings together parents, educators and STEM professionals to share ideas and resources to raise STEM-loving kids. This informative Twitter discussion, beginning at 9:00 p.m. on Feb. 19, will be moderated by #STEMchat founder Kim Moldofsky and feature such distinguished panelists as Jennifer Sherman, DuPont Global Engineering Six Sigma Black Belt and project manager; and Amy Jones, product engineer, software verification and validation for John Deere. To participate in this year's chat, which will focus on the school-to-career track in engineering for girls, tweet #Girlday2014 or #STEMchat. A number of companies and organizations - including Bechtel, Exxon Mobil, Rockwell Collins, the Society of Women Engineers, the American Engineering and Science Robotics Academy, and the Girls Scouts of America - are also hosting activities at various locations around the U.S on Feb. 20. Several other festive events will also make up this year's EWeek schedule. These activities include the Future City Competition, in which teams of middle school students and their engineer mentors design and model a city of the future, and Discover Engineering Family Day, an annual festival at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., featuring hands-on activities provided by local and national engineering organizations. The 2014 selections for the New Faces of Engineering-Professional program, which highlights the innovative work of young engineers and their impact on society, will be announced in USA Today during Engineers Week. Through the New Faces-Professional program, ASME and other engineering organizations recognize early career engineers for their contributions to their professional associations and to society. Two other DiscoverE programs - the Global Marathon and the DiscoverE Educator Awards - will continue the celebration of engineering even after EWeek ends. The Global Marathon, from March 5-7, encompasses a globally connected virtual town square of webcasts as well as locally organized, in-person satellite events. Visit www.discovere.org/our-programs/global-marathon to learn more. The DiscoverE Educator Awards program gives engineers the chance to honor pre-college STEM educators who are responsible for introducing young people to engineering concepts. Applications for the award are due March 14, and winners will be notified in late April. Read more about the DiscoverE Educator Awards here.
